Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare internet usage conditions and the concept of self respect among high school and middle school students in the Busan area. The study examined and analyzed internet addiction, deviation from a healthy life style and the factors that can lead to compulsive internet use. An aim of the research was to provide basic information to guide desirable direction for self-respect and effective internet usage. A survey of 235 middle school and high school students was conducted in September, 2007 in the Busan area. The data generated in the survey were analyzed with SPSS/Win version 10.0 and appropriate tests and statistics including t-tests, ¥ö2-tests, correlation coefficients, and regression analyses were used. Of the 235 students surveyed 92(39.1%) were male and 143(60.9%) were female while 160(68.1%) were from middle school and 75(31.9%) were from high school. While the responses of the high school students to the survey indicated higher internet addiction levels than those of the middle school students the results were not statistically significant. In terms of self-respect the survey found statistical differences in two questionnaire items such that high school students showed higher levels of self respect in those questions than middle school students. The use time of middle school student has a positive influence on compulsive usage while their self respect rating has a negative influence on compulsive usage. The use time of high school students has a positive influence on compulsive usage.
